History of Area:
Portlaoise is a thriving urban centre which has undergone tremendous expansion in recent years. The population of Portlaoise is estimated to be around 20,125 now, but the local authorities projections are that it will expand to over 60,000 in the next fifteen years. Much is being undertaken to prepare for this expansion including roads, infrastructure and water and sewerage measurements. The town has been tipped as one of the up and coming commuter towns with many escaping the gridlock and rising house prices in Dublin.
The town is growing towards providing all the facilities that it’s forever rising population requires. A town centre hotel The Heritage, the Killeshin Hotel on the Dublin Road and the Mid Way Hotel on the Abbeyleix Road. The Dunamaise Theatre and Arts Centre. The five screen Odeon Cinema. The People’s Park on the Timahoe Road. The Leisure Centre at Parkview, Moneyballytyrrell is a great asset to the town with its playground and playing pitches. The Leisure Centre is a hive of activity day and night, with indoor and outdoor activities, swimming, keep fit meeting rooms, special weekend events throughout the year. It boasts a very attractive and unusual children’s playground and aids for the elderly.
