History of Area:
History of area: Cullohill is Situated 20 miles south of Portlaoise on the N7 ‘old’ Dublin/Cork road – south of Durrow and North of Johnstown. A Castle Ruins is a key feature in the area and a Millennium Garden just behind the Catholic Church/Graveyard is worth a visit also. Hurling is popular in the area with the local team The Harps. The Community Centre is also a focal point in the village with many sports played there as well as many groups and committees using the facilities on a regular basis.
Tidy Towns Information:
Tidy Towns in Cullohill in the 1970s was very active and in 1976 won the Tidiest Village category in the National Competition. After a gap of 30 years the committee was re-established in 2013 with great support from all in the area. Many areas had become overgrown and untidy but after a lot of effort and hard work the village and surrounding areas now look really well. A feature of our work sessions is that when we finish all meet for a quick cup of tea and a sandwich in the local Community Centre – this is great from a social perspective as the group review work done earlier and make outline plans for work to embark on at the next session. Overall Tidy Towns gets great support from all in the community with the work being done being appreciated in terms of making the village and surrounding areas more presentable.
